Description | : Several
Catholic families in the village of Narakathinkuzhy K.K.DT. belonging to syro
Malabar curch of Thuckalay Diocese could not attend sunday mass because there
were no R.C. Church within 3 kilometres of distance from their residence. When His Excellency Mar George Alencherry,
the then bishop of Thuckalay Diocese came to know about this he sent priests to
celebrate Holy Mass in a small house at the centre of this village. Responding to the invitation of the Bishop Sr.
Maria, the then Regional superior sent two sisters every sunday from Mezhakode
convent to assist in the apostolic activities at this centre. They had to walk a distance of 6 km (to and
fro) because transportation facilities were very rare at that village. Benedictine Fathers were given charge of that
centre. They named the village "Bengiri".
In response to the requests of the Bishop and Fr. James Pannankuzhy OSB; the priest in charge, the Regional Superior and her council took the decision
to buy a plot of land at Bengiri and start a convent. A property with an unfinished small house was
purchased. The construction of the house
was finished and it was blessed on 11th August 2003 by Bishop Mar George
Alercherry. On the same day 3 sisters
started to stay in the newly built house.
Within one year a new parish was established at this Centre and a small
church was built from the Diocese of Thuckalay.
The sisters are engaged in apostolic activities like teaching catechism,
conducting prayer meetings, paying house visits and conducting organisations
like Mission League, Marian Sena, Vincent De Paul Society etc. |
