Description

For the Catholic families of the village of Mezhakode there were no Catholic churches in the nearby areas.  In 1994 the Archbishop of Changanacherry requested Rev. Sr. Pancrasius, the then Provincial superior of Deva Matha Province, Changanacherry to send sisters to work at this centre.  Residing in a rented house Sr. Esther and Sr. Shanthi started their apostolate on 3rd July 1994.  They visited the houses of Catholics and Christian families and helped them to deepen their faith life.  Priests from nearby parishes of Syro Malabar rite used to come to say Holy Mass on Sundays and other days in the rented house.  The sisters started an English Medium Nursery School in July 1994.  Sr. Esther was the headmistress and also the Mother Superior of the convent.  Later a prayer hall was built in a small property purchased by the Archdiocese of Changanacherry.  At present this hall is used as the parish church.  The sisters bought a land near the prayer hall and built a house there.  On 27th May 1995 the convent was blessed by His Grace Mar Joseph Powathil.  The sisters started to stay there on the same day.  The sisters of San Thom convent are engaged in family apostolate, pastoral care and education of Children.  In June 1995 the Nursery School was upgraded and St. Francis English Medium L.P. School was started.
